International Day of the Girl Child 2026: How GAF and Savaye Celebrated Girls Through Education and Empowerment

Every year on October 11, the world marks the International Day of the Girl Child, a day dedicated to the rights of girls and the barriers many of them still face. This year, Girls Affairs Foundation (GAF) celebrated International Day of the Girl Child 2026 with an awareness video and a community program, held in partnership with Savaye. The celebration focused on girl child education, sensitization, healthy competition and practical support for girls who need it most.

Why International Day of the Girl Child Matters

The United Nations General Assembly established October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child in 2011, and it was first observed in 2012. It exists to draw attention to the need to protect girls’ rights, keep them in school and open doors to opportunity.

At GAF, we believe that when a girl is educated, informed and supported, her family and her whole community benefit. That belief shaped everything we did this year. [Add the 2026 global theme here if you want to reference it.]

Watch: Our International Day of the Girl Child Awareness Video

To mark the day, GAF volunteers and team members came together to share what the celebration means to them and why investing in girls matters. The video is a short, honest look at the people behind our work and the message we want every girl to hear: you matter, and your future is worth protecting.

Inside the GAF x Savaye International Girl Child Day Celebration

On Friday, October 9, 2026, GAF and Savaye hosted a celebration at [venue, city] for [number] girls, volunteers and guests. The program combined learning, fun and giving, with activities designed to inform, challenge and uplift every girl in the room.

Sensitization on Girls’ Rights and Wellbeing

The day opened with a sensitization session that created a safe space for girls to learn about their rights and ask questions.

Girls Education Session

Because education is the foundation of empowerment, a dedicated session highlighted why girls must stay in school and how learning opens doors to better opportunities.

Quiz Competition

The quiz session turned learning into a friendly contest. Pupils worked in individually to answer questions on topics, showing curiosity, and quick thinking.

Debate Session

The debate gave girls a platform to speak up, defend their views and practise leadership. Confident public speaking is a skill that serves girls well in school, work and life.

Donations to Girls in Need

A celebration is more meaningful when it reaches those with the least. GAF and Savaye donated [items] to less privileged girls, so that they could take part in the day and feel seen and valued.

Presentation of Gifts to Winners and Less Privileged Girls

The program closed with the presentation of gifts to the quiz and debate winners and to the less privileged girls present. Every girl went home knowing that her effort, voice and presence mattered.

The Impact of Celebrating Girls Together

One day cannot solve every challenge girls face, but it can spark change. By combining sensitization, education and giving, the celebration showed girls that their rights are protected, their voices are welcome and their education is a priority.

Thank You to Savaye, Our Volunteers and Our Supporters

GAF thanks Savaye for being a true partner in this celebration. We also thank our volunteers, the participating girls and everyone who gave their time, resources and encouragement. This success belongs to all of you.
